PORTLAND, Ore. - After a 14-16 overall record and a 7-13 mark in CCC play, the Cascade College women's basketball team has qualified for the postseason for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
The seven conference wins put the T-Birds at 8th place in the 11 member league. The team will head to LaGrande to take on the #1 seeded Eastern Oregon Mountaineers tonight at 7:30.
Coming away with the upset victory will be a challenge for Cascade, as Eastern Oregon finished their season as the CCC Champs with a 24-4 record overall and 17-3 in league play. "It is definitely a tall task to attempt to upset such a quality team on the road," commented head coach Matt Murphy. "We need to contain their post players - who are very good - and shoot the ball extremely well to have a chance. We will certainly give it our best shot."
Eastern defeated the T-Birds twice during the regular season, and have several all-conference level players with playoff experience. Post players Tiffanie Ulmer (15.8) and Sheena Henderson (14.9) lead the Mounties in scoring, and Salena Leavitt is a steady guard that triggers the offense.
Cascade will try to counter with the CCC's leading rebounder in Te Awhina Aranui (12.4 rpg), and the always dangerous Robin Swain (12.8 ppg).
