LaGrande, OR - The Thunderbird Track & Field wrapped up their season last weekend at the CCC Championships hosted by Eastern Oregon University.
With several strong individual performances, the men finished in 9th place, scoring 29.5 points for the meet. The women mustered 2 points for the weekend as several ladies just missed scoring opportunities for the team.
Sprinter Tyeson Wood tallied the bulk of the scoring for Cascade as he dashed to a 2nd place finish in the 100 meters, and a 3rd place finish in the 200 meters. "I think Tyeson was a little disappointed he didn't win both events," commented coach Ryan Rouse, "but it was a nice way to finish the year as he overcame a slow start to the season due to injuries."
Joseph Witzig ran a personal best of 4:07.35 in the 1500 meters to score an 8th place finish. "Joe ran a great race," commented Rouse. "He outpaced some very good runners today. He nearly scored for us in the 800 meters as well, so Joe's work this season really paid off for the weekend."
Also scoring for the men was Mike Patterson with a 7th place in 400 meter hurdles, Chris Smerke with a 7th place in the 200 meters, and Lucas Martin with a 3rd place in the pole vault.
Another highlight for the men was a 4th place finsh for the 4x400 meter relay team of Stephan Valverde, Mike Patterson, Chris Smerke, and Tyeson Wood.
Mindy McCullough scored the lone points for the women with a 7th place finish in the high jump.
"Overall, I am pleased with the effort," said Rouse. "The kids worked hard all year at improving their marks and times. We have a good core of athletes to build on for the future."
